The Tigers are 'roaring' to go
SG Petch sponsored Teesside Tigers kick off the new EKL karting season with a visit to Whilton Mill karting circuit in Northampton tomorrow.
The Elite Karting League is made up of 4 drivers per team each representing their towns and cities from around the UK. Each event comprises of sprint and endurance racing with drivers earning points for both the team and individual drivers standings.
The EKL is good for drivers and teams because of the format, price and accessibility. You don’t even need to own a kart as the League supplies them. With a mixture of sprint and endurance racing it is suited to both driving styles.
The random grids and kart changes for each race help to ensure fair and even racing, and with a minimum weight of 85kg per driver it appeals to not just small streamline F1 types but also the averaged sized guy who likes to race.
Building on success
The Tigers had a good season in 2012 with all 4 team members featuring in the EKL top 30 individual driver standings. Collectively they’re an even stronger force finishing the 2012 championship in 3rd place and lifting the British 24 hour ‘Help for Heroes’ trophy.
Team Captain Ian Neilson said: “2012 was a decent season for the Tigers and hopefully we can improve on that this year. The Winter means your not in a kart racing but we’ve managed to get in a few good practice sessions in the run up and everybody’s feeling fit and raring to go.”
