New engine for Picanto
A new high performance engine will make its way into the all new Picanto earlier next year.
Promising a blend of performance and economy, the new ‘Kappa’ engine is Kia’s first three-cylinder unit fitted with a turbocharger to deliver an impressive 110ps and 137 Nm of Torque from just 1,500 rpm up to 4,500 rpm which will give the engine excellent ‘real-world’ driveability.
In order to achieve greater performance Kia engineers have applied a special Diamond coating used in professional motorsport and high-performance motorcycle engines – which reduces friction on the tappets and improve efficiency. Newly designed ‘beehive’ valve springs, improved valve timing (CVVT), low friction piston rings and an off-set crankshaft will cut power loss. The results will mean an 8.8% fuel economy improvement over current Kappa engines as well as an increase in power.
Like all Kia engines low maintenance and reliability is high on the agenda so expect this engine to be covered by the 7-year/100,000 mile warranty. Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until 2012 to try it.
